A network of Innovators, Technologists, Strategists, Data Scientists, Lawyers and Business Executives

(who happen to be mostly women)

It all started when…

after attending yet another tech conference in the San Francisco Bay Area, a light bulb clicked on. If I had been to one conference or meet-up, I had been to them all. The attendee and speaker list seemed to be cut from the same fabric and each conversation, regardless of the title or description listed on the event agenda, seemed to be designed around applauding each other’s ‘awesomeness’ and how technology would solve every global ailment. I agree the game-changing potential is absolutely there, technology is neither inherently good nor bad. Without critical thinking and honest conversations around responsible innovation, to include ethics, culture, and privacy, techno-utopia will quickly degrade into a techno-nightmare. There were many other women and men who had the same ‘lightbulb’ experience, so we decided to work together to fill the void in diverse thought representation and stir in some critical dialogue.

Over the past year, more events have begun to weave in a break-out session or two around algorithmic biases and appropriate AI applications. However, it is still not driving the product development strategy discussions. There are also more women invited to participate in similarly set-aside panel discussions to support women in the field. While all are great steps in the right direction, we at Ren.ai.ssance realized professionals from all walks of life had a lot more to offer to strategically develop the digital future. Responsible innovation requires an eclectic mindset that fuses together history with market trending, data science with business goals, and digital infrastructure with legal frameworks. Moving fast and breaking things doesn’t scale in society’s application of AI, so let’s do this thing…intelligently.
